Whether you have just got engaged or you have been engaged and planning for a while, the time will come where you need to start looking for THE dress, you know?! THE dress you will be walking down the aisle and celebrating the best day of your life in, yup … THAT dress.
Before you start your ‘shopping’ experiences, it is best to do your research.
But before we get into that, there are a few things you need to know about dress purchasing.
#1 It takes 6 months to order the dress
Yes, You did read that right … on average it takes approximately 6 months from the time that you place your order for it to arrive in store. Remember these dresses are designed and manufactured to perfection and on top of a couple of weeks logistics operations, overall it is one hefty process. Some dresses have the ability to be placed under ‘Rush Order’, this often comes at a small cost. If your big day is approaching and you are tight for time (4/5 months) some designer labels offer us the opportunity to enter the order as rushed meaning they put it through the factories as a ‘priority’. So all in all, your dress can arrive quicker (However, we are still talking 2/3 months). Obviously if you are super tight for time, we do offer you the option to purchase the sample dress ‘off the peg’, then you can take the dress with you on the same day and straight to the seamstress for alterations.
#2 Seamstress work
Pretty much ALL dresses will need some kind of work done on your dress to ensure it is perfect for your big day. Dresses arrive in standard dress sizes (size 12/18 etc.) We will order the dress size that is closest to fitting your measurements. Therefore, dresses will need some nitty gritty bits altered as all your beautiful bodies come in all shapes and sizes (length, straps tightened, bust taken in, and all sorts). Remember there are peak seasons when seamstress’ are at their busiest – Summer weddings and prom season, winter weddings etc. – So, if your wedding falls at peak times ensure a good amount of time to get the seamstress alterations done properly. On average you can expect a seamstress to take 4-6 weeks, but we recommend up to 8 weeks – for precautionary reasons.
Take into consideration your venue, your theme, your personality, what you would be comfortable in, what would suit your body shape and all sorts. Working in the business for what seems like forever, we are pretty confident in our ability to help with recommending dresses to what we think would suit your body. Research imagery – collect images of styles/designers you love, the more the better.
Don’t be reluctant to try
What you think you may hate, can be surprising when you try it on. Take our advice and simply try, even if it isn’t your cup of tea at least you can rule it out (whether its the material, colour, or style) try a variety!!
Who to bring?
I know when it comes to shopping for the dress you want mums, cousins, bridesmaids, sisters, in-laws and everyone to be there when you say ‘Yes to the dress’, BUT take it from us. The more is not always the merrier. Too many opinions can be confusing for what is already an overwhelming experience for you as a bride. Try and stick to a 3 people maximum, the three most valuable opinions should be the most cherished. If you are struggling to choose between all your bridesmaids, don’t choose … just stick with family & maid of honour only. When you find your dress or find a choice of a few and need help selecting THE ONE by all means book a second appointment to come and show the squad of 23 bridesmaids if you really want. This way they can help you with the dresses you have already pre-selected and no tension or unwanted opinions makes for a more pleasant experience.
How long can it take?
On average an appointment will last between 1 hour and 1 hour and a half. We DO NOT have a time limit, you can spend as little or as long as you wish, some brides can spend up to three hours in the store. There are also no limits as to how many times you can return, we understanding choosing your dress is quite a big deal if you need to come back 5 times to refresh your mind of your favourite gowns, by all means of course!!
